Creative Freelance Studio

You name it. You say it. We forge it.

The Upstart Foundry builds the fundamentals small and medium-sized businesses need to compete — professional, boldly unique, and made to last. We start with the first thing a client hands over — a card that means business — and print everything that follows it.

Behind every craft, it's just the two of us — me and my business partner, answering for the work personally, and built on the better part of a decade doing exactly this. As the business grows, the services grow stronger. So do the relationships.

First Principles

Whatever you can name, we can build.

Every business deserves fundamentals that hold up — professional, boldly unique, built without limits. If you can think of it, and it sits within our crafts, we can certainly provide it: from the card in your pocket to the website behind it, and everything that keeps both working.

Running on something old, outdated, or poorly built? Even better — we take what's there and forge it into something that works, turning ideas into realities and goals into results.

Capabilities

What We Forge

Six crafts, in the order most businesses come to need them — starting with the one that fits in a pocket.

How It Works

From Hello To Handover

However you found us, the road from here is the same three steps — no charge to find out where you stand.

Step 01

Say Hello

A free chat — by phone, video or face to face — about what your business needs. No obligation, and it costs nothing.

Step 02

We Quote

A clear figure, agreed before anything starts. Package discounts and the first-time rate are applied automatically.

Step 03

We Forge

Designed with you, built properly, and handed over ready to use — whenever you're ready to start.

Pricing & Packages

What It Costs

Every job is different, so every price is worked out for the business in front of us — never read off a list. We'll talk it through however suits you: over the phone, face to face, or by email — and you'll have a clear figure agreed before any work begins.

Take on more than one of the five services and a package discount comes off the whole project — the more you combine, the bigger it gets. How far depends on the work in front of us; we'll put a figure to it when we talk, and it always beats commissioning each piece on its own. It stacks with the first-time welcome, too, so a first job across two services saves you twice over.

Print is the one place the scale is fixed. Origination and press setup are paid once however many come off the machine, so printed items earn their own published rates:

On printed items

5%
Matching pair

Two items drawn from one design — a card and a leaflet, say. The thinking is done once.

10%
Full set — four or more

Type, colour and layout already settled across the set.

15%
Six or more items

A complete print identity — one brief, one build, one press booking.

25%
Reprint within 1 month

The artwork already exists. You pay for the run and the managing of it, not the design a second time.

Longer runs cost less per unit for the same reason — setup is paid once whatever the quantity. See the full print rates and the catalogue.

First-time client

Your first commission, 10% off.

First time bringing work to the Foundry? Whichever service you begin with, your opening project carries a 10% welcome discount — and it stacks with a package discount, so a first job across more than one service saves you twice over. On print, you're given the welcome rate or the print rate, whichever saves you more.

The welcome rate stacks with a package discount — take on more than one service and both come off. Print rates are the exception: there you're given the print rate or the welcome rate, whichever leaves you best off, never both. We work it out for you; you never have to ask.

Consultancy is free — always. Working out what you need never costs anything, and local delivery is free too — printed work is brought to your door by hand across Norwich and the surrounding area. The rates above cover the crafts we go on to build. Nothing is ever charged before it is agreed. Start the conversation and we'll put a number to it.

Where We Start

The First Craft: Cards & Print

To begin, the Foundry is built for small and medium-sized businesses — the local ventures just finding their feet. And the first thing most of them hand a customer is a card. So that's where we start: cards that actually mean business, shaped around your size, your quantity, and the story you want told. But it doesn't stop at business cards — any card, any size, any run, and your own design is every bit as welcome as one we make from scratch. A taste of the range:

Build It Your Own

Try the forge yourself.

Pick a format — business card, leaflet, booklet, occasion card or postcard — then mix finishes, layouts, accents, corners, lettering and texture, type your details, and watch it take shape. It's a taste of the real thing, except the finished proof lands in your hands, not a browser.

Quantity

A sketch, not a shelf product — what you build here is an example of the range, not the finished article. Like what you've made? Say the word and we'll forge it for real.

One of one. Whatever you sketch here — or bring us of your own — is forged from scratch for you alone. Every card we make is tailored to a single client's needs and never reused for another. No templates, no repeats: your mark is yours.

The design is a two-hand job — you and us, and that's it. You bring your business and a rough direction; from there, we do the rest. Every design, every layout and input, and we source and manage the print house that produces the finished cards too. You approve the proof — we forge and deliver.

Not just business cards

Anything that comes on card, we print. Any type, any size, any quantity — a single card or a thousand, standard sizes or your own. Bring a finished design, or have one forged from scratch:

Business & Trade Cards

The classic — plus appointment cards, loyalty cards, and referral cards that keep customers coming back.

Leaflets & Flyers

Single or folded, A6 to A4 — menus, price lists, drops and handouts, printed on proper card stock.

Booklets & Bound

Pamphlets, brochures, order-of-service and small booklets — stapled, folded or bound.

Cards & Occasions

Greetings, invitations, thank-you and postcard runs — for the business or the moment.

Your Own Design

Already have artwork? Hand it over and we take it to print — no redesign required unless you want one.

Made From Scratch

Nothing yet? We design the whole thing with you, then print it — the full two-hand job.

Included as standard

Delivered to your door, free.

No collection trip, no courier, no delivery charge — we hand-deliver your finished print ourselves, free across Norwich and the surrounding area. It's how we make sure the work reaches you in one piece and you're happy with it. Further out across Norfolk, just ask when we quote.

Options not quite matching the picture in your head? If your design criteria runs beyond these presets — or you've already sketched a design of your own — bring it straight to us and we'll forge a fully custom card to your spec.

Website Design & Development

The window behind the card.

Two lanes into the same forge. The New Build — a site from nothing, shaped around your brand and your goals. And The Restoration — the old, outdated, or poorly-built site you already own, reforged into something you're proud to point at.

  • A proper discovery chat — your brand, your goals, your customers
  • Mobile-first design that bends to any screen
  • A fast, search-ready build
  • All content written and input for you — words, photos, pages
  • Domain and hosting sourced and set up — like the print house, but for pixels
  • Launch, then a 30-day aftercare watch

You bring the business and roughly what you want it to say. We design, write, build, and hand you the keys. The domain and the site are yours — no hostage-taking, no lock-in.

Start this craft

Built around your business, not a category

Before a single pixel, we work out what the site actually has to do — for your trade, your customers, and the way you really work. The design follows the requirements, and the requirements come from you. No two are ever alike.

  • A tradesperson — found and phoned: local search, reviews and a tap-to-call, not a slideshow.
  • A café — today's specials and a table: an easy-to-change menu, a booking button up top.
  • A maker or shop — a till sized to your stock, simple to restock yourself.
  • A professional — trust up front: credentials, testimonials and a clean brochure.

What it can be — eight starting points, never a menu

The One-Pager

Everything a customer needs on a single scrolling page — who you are, what you do, how to reach you. Small, sharp, done well.

The Brochure Site

The classic done properly — who you are, what you do, your story and how to reach you, across a handful of tidy pages.

The Booking Site

Diary, forms and calendar wired in — customers book themselves in while you're busy working.

The Small Shop

Products, basket and payments — a till that never shuts, sized for a small business, not a warehouse.

The Showcase

Gallery-led, for makers, trades and photographers — the work does the talking, big and uncluttered.

The Directory

Listings, members or venues — searchable and sortable, a little local guide that keeps itself useful.

The Members' Area

Logins and a door that opens only for the right people — a club, a course, or resources kept for members.

The Campaign Page

One sharp page for a launch, an offer or an ad to point at — built to do a single job and do it well.

You'll see it before it's built — and watch it while it is. A live preview link from the first week, so the site takes shape in front of you, not behind a curtain.

Step 01

The Sketch

The look agreed on paper before anything is built — shaped with you until it feels right. No surprises at the unveiling, because there is no unveiling.

Step 02

The Build

A live preview link while we work — watch it take shape day by day. Words, photos and pages handled by us; opinions welcome from you.

Step 03

The Keys

Launch, a proper walkthrough so you can drive it, and a 30-day aftercare watch. After that, the fix-it bench stays on call if you want it.

Every build leaves with the padlock, the speed, the accessibility, and the search boxes ticked — the boring stuff, done properly.

One of one. Every site we build is made for a single business: tailored to your needs, never a resold template, and never handed to anyone else.

Opens your email with the brief ready to send — add your name and number and we'll come back to you to talk it through.

Custom Coding & Technical Support

The fix-it bench. Whoever built it, we won't tut.

Tailored code for the thing your business actually needs — and honest repairs for the thing that's stopped working. One-off fixes when that's all it takes; ongoing care when you'd rather never think about it again.

  • Whatever it's built on — WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, or hand-written code
  • New features: booking forms, galleries, payment links, integrations
  • Bug fixes and full site rescues
  • Speed tuning and security updates
  • Plain-English explanations of what broke — and why it won't again

You describe the problem in your own words — no technical vocabulary required. We find it, fix it, and explain it in English. And every password, account and line of code stays in your name — handed over, documented, yours.

Bring us a fault
“My site is slow.”

Usually oversized images or a tired server. The bench trims what's heavy and moves what needs moving — most sites load in under half the time after a tune-up.

“It looks wrong on phones.”

It was built for screens nobody uses anymore. We rebuild the layout to bend instead of break — phones first, since that's where your customers are.

“The contact form went quiet.”

Silent forms lose real customers, silently. We find where the messages die, fix the plumbing, and set an alarm so it can never go quiet again without us knowing.

“I can't update it myself.”

You shouldn't need a developer to change a menu. We either simplify it until you can, or take updates off your hands entirely as ongoing care.

“Something's just… broken.”

Bring it in. Diagnosis comes free of judgment — we'll tell you what's wrong, what it takes to fix, and whether it's worth fixing at all.

Two halves of one bench. The custom code is what we build you from scratch; the technical support is how we keep it — and whatever else has stopped working — running. Same hands, same standard.

What comes off the bench — the code, custom

The usual asks

  • Booking & appointment systems
  • Online shops, checkouts & payment links
  • Smart forms — enquiries, quotes, sign-ups, spam kept out
  • Galleries, catalogues & searchable listings
  • Member logins & areas kept for the right people
  • Integrations — calendars, mailing lists, socials, accounting

The less usual — still yes

  • Quote & price calculators built to your rules
  • Dashboards that turn your numbers into a page you'll actually read
  • Bridges between two systems that won't talk to each other
  • Platform migrations — moved without losing your place in search
  • Multilingual builds & accessibility overhauls
  • One-off interactive pieces you can't buy off a shelf

How far the help reaches

Ring the bench first. A simple question gets a straight answer in minutes — often before you've put the phone down. No ticket, no hold music.

Down the phone

Quick questions and small steadying, answered in minutes.

Remotely

We log in and fix the site, the code or the setting — same or next working day.

In person

For the knotty or too-specific jobs that can't be sorted down a line.

Nothing is touched without a way back. A backup before every change, a test before every launch — your live site never becomes our experiment.

How the bench takes work in

The Fire

Site down, customers locked out, payments failing. Jumps the queue — same working day, no ceremony.

The Fault

Broken but limping: forms misfiring, pages wandering, something not right. Answered within a working day, fixed on a date we give you — not “soon.”

The Favour

The nice-to-have: a new feature, a tidier gallery, a faster page. Quoted plainly, scheduled honestly, never forgotten.

The Ongoing Care — for those who'd rather never think about it

One-off fixes suit plenty of people. But if you'd rather the website simply stayed someone else's problem, the bench keeps a standing place for it:

Backed Up

Copies taken on schedule — nothing can be lost that we can't put back.

Kept Current

Updates applied before they become security holes, not after.

Watched

Uptime monitored around the clock — we usually know it's down before you do.

First In Line

Care clients jump the bench queue — and the small tweaks are simply handled.

Quotes agreed before work starts — and if it isn't worth fixing, you'll be told so plainly. The bench doesn't sell repairs the patient doesn't need.

Website Data Analytics

Honest numbers. One page. In English.

Not a dashboard you'll never open — a single monthly page that says who came, where from, what they did, and where they gave up. Every report ends the same way: one action worth taking.

  • Measurement set up properly — private and cookie-compliant
  • A one-page monthly report, written like a person wrote it
  • Goals agreed first — calls, bookings, orders — so we count wins, not just visits
  • One recommended action a month — never a homework pile
  • A quarterly sit-down to check the direction

You run the business. We watch the numbers and tell you the one thing worth doing about them.

Start the numbers

The first question isn't “how many visitors?” — it's “what counts as a win for you?” Calls. Bookings. Walk-ins. We measure what pays, not what flatters.

What gets counted

Footfall

How many came, and which door they used — Google, socials, maps, or straight to you.

Search Terms

The exact words people type before they find you — and the ones where they find someone else instead.

Held & Lost

Which pages keep attention — and the one where people quietly give up.

Taps That Count

Calls pressed, emails clicked, forms sent, directions asked. The numbers that become money.

Phone vs Desk

What your customers actually browse on — round here, it's mostly phones.

Busy Hours

When people look you up, so posts and offers land while they're looking.

Where They Are

The towns and postcodes actually reading your pages — your real catchment, mapped.

Page Speed

The seconds that quietly cost you customers — found, timed, and handed to the bench for trimming.

Set up right, so the numbers are real

Honest numbers need honest wiring. Before the first report we lay the groundwork — and there's more we can switch on if it earns its place.

The groundwork

  • Measurement installed properly — set to your goals, not left on the box defaults
  • The cookie notice set up the way the law now asks — so you're covered, and your numbers don't quietly stop counting
  • Calls, forms, bookings and orders wired up as real events — we count what pays
  • A tracked phone number, so calls get credited to the page or post that earned them
  • Your Google Business watched too — the map searches, calls and directions that never touch the website

The extras — if they earn their place

  • Heatmaps and quiet screen recordings — exactly where people click, scroll and give up
  • A live dashboard, if you'd rather glance any time than wait for the page
  • Every marketing link tagged, so you know which post, ad or email actually brought someone
  • Already have analytics? A health-check — we'll tell you honestly whether it's even working
Step 01

The Baseline

A month of quiet, private measuring — set up properly, no judgments yet. You can't steer by numbers you've only just met.

Step 02

The Rhythm

One page a month, in English, ending in one action. Read it with your first coffee; done by the second.

Step 03

The Compounding

Each action gets checked against the next month's numbers — what worked stays, what didn't goes. A quarterly sit-down steers the lot.

Measured privately, cookie-compliant, no creepy tracking — your customers aren't the product.

Digital & Physical Marketing

One mark, everywhere they look.

A website is a window — this craft is what walks people up to it. Wide in range, sharp in effect, and shaped to whatever kind of noise your business needs. Local first: found by the people five miles from you before the people five counties away.

  • Local search & your Google Business Profile, claimed and kept sharp
  • Reviews grown and answered — the currency of local trust
  • Pictures, illustrations and video created from scratch — content made, not just posted
  • Your social pages redesigned, restructured, and run for you — Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and beyond
  • Email your regulars actually open — news and offers, without the spam smell
  • Ads online — and out in the world, from a bus-stop panel to a corner noticeboard
  • Signage, posters and banners for the campaign — while cards, leaflets, booklets and all print keep their own forge

You approve the message. We plan it, make it, place it, print it, and keep every piece carrying the same mark.

Get found

Found — the listing

Followed — the post

Kept — the flyer

Name the spot, and we'll chase it. A bus-stop panel on your road? We'll find who sells the space. The corkboard by the corner shop? We'll pin it ourselves. No placement too big to ask about — none too small to bother with.

The wider spread — on screens and out in the world

On screens

  • Google & Facebook ads, run and watched — search ads for people already hunting, social ads for people scrolling
  • Short-form video & reels — the format that travels furthest right now, made for you
  • Retargeting — the quiet nudge that brings back the ones who nearly booked
  • A landing page built for the campaign — one job, one button, from the web forge
  • QR codes that bridge the two — a poster or flyer that opens straight to booking

Out in the world

  • Van & vehicle graphics — a moving billboard on every job you drive to
  • Window & shopfront graphics — the biggest sign you already own
  • Branded merch — stickers, totes, tees and the giveaways people actually keep
  • A-boards, roller banners & pop-up stands — for the stall, the fair, the shopfront
  • Branded packaging that carries the mark out the door — from cards & print

Page running — your socials, handled

Already posting on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn — or anywhere else your business lives? Hand the pages to the forge. We take what's there and run it properly:

The Redesign

Profile, banners, highlights and pinned posts — refaced so every page carries your mark properly.

The Restructure

Bios, links, sections and layout remodelled so people find what they came for in one look.

The Content, Handled

Posts planned, made and published for you — an all-round content handler, week in, week out.

And it doesn't run in its own lane — everything above feeds through it. The pictures, illustrations and video we make become your posts; the posts become your ads, online and out in the world; the local listing stays in step; the printables carry the same campaign out the door. One forge, one feed — every piece drinking from it.

Consultancy

Free, and only ever about the work.

Not sure which craft you need — or whether you need one at all? Sit down with us and we will work it out together. It costs nothing, and it never will. This is not business advice and we hold no certificates for that; it is simply a straight conversation about which of our six crafts would serve you, and which would be a waste of your money.

  • The Once-Over — a look over your cards, site and presence, and an honest read on which crafts would actually help
  • The Sit-Down — a proper conversation about what you are trying to achieve, and what it would take to get there
  • The Shortlist — you leave with what we would do, in what order, and what we would leave well alone

You bring what you are trying to achieve. We tell you which crafts would get you there — and we will say so plainly when the answer is none of them.

Ask the question

Held however suits you

Video Call

Face to face without leaving the shop. Screens shared, decisions made.

Phone Call

The quickest route to a straight answer — no diary required.

One-to-One Meetup

Around a table, in person — Norwich and Norfolk-wide.

This is strictly about our six crafts and which of them your business needs — what to start with, what to leave, and what order to do it in. It costs nothing. What it isn't: business, financial, legal or tax advice — we hold no licences or qualifications for any of that, and for anything of the sort we'll point you to the proper professionals without a flicker of pride.

Step 01

You send the question

Through the box below, by phone, or by email — in whatever words come naturally.

Step 02

We shape the sitting

Within a working day, we'll come back with which shape fits: a call, a session, or a written once-over.

Step 03

It ends in writing

Whatever the format, the answer arrives on paper — yours to keep, ours to stand behind.

Everything you share — numbers, quotes, doubts — stays between us.

“Every consultation is handled by me, personally — not a call centre, not a package. You'll get my honest read, even when the honest read is you don't need us for this.”

B. Hineson — Founder, The Upstart Foundry

The Advantage

Partners, not vendors.

Working with us means tapping into years of hands-on expertise across card design and print, coding, data insight, financial analytics, and creative research — sharpened further by modern, AI-assisted tooling. It's the difference between hiring a vendor and gaining a partner who makes the whole process run smoother, sharper, and more insightful.

No jargon, no hard sell, no vanishing act once the work's delivered — just straight answers, honest craft, and someone who actually picks up the phone.

The Focus Today

Cards first — never cards only

Cards and print are the main aspect of the line-up: the craft we lead with, and the one that gets our sharpest attention — business cards, leaflets, booklets, occasion cards, whatever needs pressing. But they don't arrive alone — the more advanced end of the forge comes with them from day one: website design and development, custom coding and technical support, data analytics, digital and physical marketing — and a free consultation to work out which of them you actually need.

How It Fits Together

One forge, print to pixels

Every service feeds the next. The card sets the identity; the website carries it further; the analytics show who's paying attention; the marketing brings more of them to the door. One partner, one standard — from the first handshake to the full build.

Not sure what you need yet? Even better. Most of the best work starts with "something's not quite right, but we can't put our finger on it." Name the itch — we'll do the rest.

Bring us the problem

One bench free

We're taking on one person.

A single position, not a hiring round. We're after someone who cares about the craft as much as the deadline — print, pixels, or both. No form to fill in: tell us what you make, and why it matters to you.

B. Hineson — Founder, The Upstart Foundry

A decade in the making

Long before the Foundry had a name, I was already doing the work — building and fixing websites, shaping brands, and sorting the marketing and the numbers behind them. For the better part of a decade I did it hands-on: first for myself, then for friends and family, and over the years for a handful of small businesses who wanted a pair of hands they could trust.

That's ten years of real experience, gathered one job at a time, across every craft on this page. The Upstart Foundry is me taking it a step further — the same work, the same honesty, now offered full-time and in full.
